Los Farruco features two generations of artists- all direct descendents of the legendary patriarch and flamenco dance master, El Farruco who performed in San Francisco in the late 1980s as part of Claudio Segovia and Hector Orezzoli's Broadway production, "Flamenco Puro". Farruquito, the superstar of the Farruco clan, wowed local audiences when he appeared here with Juana Amaya in 2003 when he was only 18 years-old. In town for The Bay Area Flamenco Partnership's Festival of Flamenco Arts and Traditions 2009, Los Farruco "first family of Gypsy flamenco dance" make their Bay Area premier featuring two of the maestro's younger grandsons --Farruco (“El Farru”) and Barullo (“El Negro”) as well as both of his daughters --La Farruca and La Faraona "la madre de la buleria"--. Accompanied by celebrated guitarists Antonio Rey and El Tuto and some of Spain's most outstanding young flamenco singers incuding Pedro el Granaino, Mara Rey, El Rubio de Pruna and Antonio Zuniga, Los Farruco promises a thrilling evening of Gypsy flamenco dance and music.

Soledad Barrio & NOCHE FLAMENCA

BERKELEY, December 15, 2008—Digging “deep into flamenco’s dark soul” (Village Voice), Soledad Barrio & Noche Flamenca return to Cal Performances on Friday & Saturday, January 23 & 24 at 8:00 p.m. in Zellerbach Hall with a program titled Abre la Puerta (“Open the Door”). Focusing on the three elements of flamenco—cante (song), toque (guitar) and baila (dance)—co-founder and artistic director Martin Santangelo and his celebrated star, Soledad Barrio, have perfected the ancient art form. The husband and wife duo founded the ensemble in 1993, and it has quickly become one of the most sought-after dance companies in the world. “Since starting as chief dance critic here…I have encountered many dance companies, and many more individual dancers. … Of these there has been none I have been so glad to discover as Noche Flamenca and, above all, its lead dancer, Soledad Barrio. I can think of no current ballet dancer in the world as marvelous as she” (The New York Times). In keeping with the company’s superb artisanship, Noche Flaminca won the 2003 Lucille Lortel award for Special Theatrical Experience and the 2006 National Dance Project award. In addition to Barrio, the performance features dancers Antonia Jimenez (“El Chupete”), Sol La Argentinita and Rebeca Tomás; guitarists Salva de Maria and Amir Haddad; and singers Manuel Gago and Emilio Florido.

Cal Performances’ Latin Music Series features a talk by Jesse “Chuy” Varela on Friday, January 23 at 5:00 p.m. at Zellerbach Hall. This talk is the second in a series that includes background information, guest interviews and musical illustrations to complement performances by Noche Flamenca; the Afro-Cuban All Stars (Feb. 25); and Chick Corea and John McLaughlin’s Five Peace Band (Mar. 21). Although the talks are free and open to the public, tickets must be purchased to attend the concerts.

NOCHE FLAMENCA
Noche Flamenca was founded 15 years ago in Madrid and regularly tours the globe. In addition to its Cal Performances engagement, recent performance highlights in North America include Jacob’s Pillow Dance Festival, the Ravinia Festival, the American Dance Festival, Wolf Trap and the Hollywood Bowl, among others. Internationally, the company has appeared in Australia, New Zealand, Greece and Egypt, among others. With annual seasons in New York City and Buenos Aires, and return engagements at theaters around the world, the company has a dedicated worldwide audience. The company’s multiple talents are interwoven and given equal weight, in an artistic vision developed by Santangelo and Barrio. Some of Spain’s most renowned artists, such as Belen Maya, Alejandro Granados, Antonio Vizarraga, Rafael “Falo” Jimenez and David Serva, have worked, and continue to work, with the company. Noche Flamenca is “a miracle, the answer to the question of where the excitement, the grit, the lacerating intimacy and the professionalism went in Spanish dance,” commented the San Francisco Examiner.

The co-founder of Noche Flamenco, Soledad Barrio, has been described by George C. Wolfe, former Artistic Director of New York’s Joseph Papp Public Theater, as “a once-in-a-lifetime perfomer who combines overwhelming physicality and spirituality.” She was born in Madrid and trained in flamenco and clásico español. Barrio has appeared as soloist with the Ballet Español of Paco Romero, Manuela Vargas, Blanca del Rey, Luisillo, El Guito, Manolete, Cristobal Reyes and Toleo. In 2001, Barrio was named the winner of a New York Dance & Performance Award (aka the “Bessie”) for Outstanding Creative Achievement. She and Santangelo have two daughters, Gabriela and Stella. Of the fiery intensity of Barrio, Jennifer Dunning of The New York Times stated, “[She] seemed possessed by smoldering, do-or-die flamenco passion…An entire evening of her dancing would probably fill the city’s coronary wards.”
