tips on contracting a show or performance
Are you interested in contracting a flamenco performance?
Flamenco performances are a wonderful cultural experience that can fit into just about any space, event, and audience, from theaters to weddings, corporate parties to festivals...Here are some basics to help you get started...
Artists are professionals. The Artists List includes a whole range of artists, from international Master Artists to emerging artists. The performance, and your contract, will be reflective of their experience and artistic status. Please discuss this directly with the artists.
Flamenco shows at a "bare bones" minimum will include a dancer, a singer and a guitarist, usually two dancers. This is a "cuadro" or group show. Guitarists, however, are also hired for solo performances.
Dancers will need an even danceable surface. Slate decks and concrete floors are hazardous. Many troupes and companies may be able to supply their own stage for a fee.
Performers may need a private and secure dressing room.
"Clapping" or "Palmas": The artists' claps are the "palmas" and comprise an intricate beat structure of rhythms particular to each "palo" or type of composition. The palmas are in 12 beat structures (or 4 in the case of Tangos) and will often have counter time, even sub-counter time. Clapping along when you are not a skilled palmero is like taking your own drum set to a rock concert.
Jaelos, shouts and whispers from the audience such as "Olé" (often pronounced ‘all-ay’) are to commend and inspire a performer. There is a more relaxed etiquette around these, but most aficionados are aware of the right time to interject an inspirational or appreciative vocalization :-)
Flamenco is a culture, a lifestyle, a tradition.
Enjoy your show!
SF Flamenco is a volunteer project, supported by the community, for the community, and does not manage artists. Please contact the artists directly, not SF Flamenco. Read the Mission. SF Flamenco is in no way related to your contract. Please read our Disclaimer.
